Dermal Fillers For a More Youthful Look

Concerned about wrinkles or thinning lips? Dermal fillers can help reverse signs of aging and help you look your best. Your Kaysville dermatologist Jacqueline Silkey, MD, answers a few common questions about fillers.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are injected under the skin to help plump specific areas of your face. Common filler ingredients include hyaluronic acid, collagen and calcium hydroxyapatite. Fillers are available in temporary, semi-permanent and permanent varieties. Your dermatologist will discuss the best options for your situation during your first appointment.

How can dermal fillers help me?

Dermal fillers not only reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines, they also restore volume to your face. As you age, the layer of fat under your skin starts to shrink. Without the support that the fat layer normally provides, skin tends to sag and wrinkles become noticeable. Fillers are often used to:

  • Improve and soften the appearance of wrinkles, creases and lines
  • Fill in acne scars to make them less noticeable
  • Make undereye areas less puffy
  • Improve the appearance of the nasolabial folds between the mouth and nose
  • Decrease crows’ feet
  • Add volume to lips and cheeks
  • Enhance facial contours

What happens during the dermal filler procedure?

If your dermatologist thinks you are a good candidate for dermal fillers, she will examine your face and mark the areas that will receive treatment. After cleaning the injection sites, she’ll use a local anesthetic or topical anesthetic ointment to numb your skin. She’ll inject the filler at the injection sites, massage the area, and determine if additional filler is needed.

How will I feel after dermal filler treatment?

You will experience some swelling and discomfort after the injections and may notice bruising, redness or numbness after treatment. Applying ice can help reduce swelling and pain. Symptoms are usually mild and only last a few hours or days.
