The Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is an excellent option if you’re wasting too much time shaving or waxing. Best of all, removal is virtually painless. Jacqueline Silkey, M.D., of Kaysville, UT, explains how laser hair removal can help you get rid of unwanted hair.

How does laser hair removal work?

Lasers use visible light beams to destroy hair in your follicles. When the light penetrates the pigment in hair, it is converted to heat energy. That energy damages the follicles and slows or stops the growth of new hairs. Because lasers emit very thin light beams, they can be used to precisely remove hair without damaging the surrounding skin. Lasers were originally designed to remove dark hairs on people with light skin, but advances in laser technology have now made it possible to also remove hair from people with darker skin.

What parts of the body are treated with laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is good choice if you want to get rid of hair on your shoulders, arms, underarms, back, neck, ears, chest, bikini, chip, upper lip and face. Treatment time varies depending on the size of the area. Removing hair from your legs may take as long as 60 minutes, while laser removal of upper lip hair may only take 10 minutes. During the treatment, you may experience a slight pinching sensation when the laser is aimed at the hair, but most people find the process much less painful than waxing or tweezing.

How many laser hair removal sessions will I need?

Six to eight sessions is the average, although that number may vary depending upon how much hair you want removed. Hair growth occurs in cycles, with some hairs actively growing while others remain dormant. During your treatment session, the laser will be used remove all of the active hairs but won’t affect dormant hairs. In a few weeks, those dormant hairs will begin to grow and can then be removed.
